Church members carry a single wooden cross through central London in silent witness on Good Friday
London, 3 April 2026 — Christians from Methodist Central Hall Westminster marked Good Friday with a Walk of Witness through central London, carrying a wooden cross through the nation’s political heart.
The silent procession moved from Methodist Central Hall past the Palace of Westminster, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Downing Street, Whitehall and the Cenotaph, before concluding in Trafalgar Square. There, participants joined crowds gathered for the Wintershall Theatre Company’s open-air performance of the Passion of Jesus.
The route intentionally traces the corridors of power. On the first Good Friday, Jesus was brought before the political and religious authorities of his day. This annual walk echoes that journey, placing a visible, reflective presence into the centre of public life.
Revd Tony Miles, Superintendent Minister at Methodist Central Hall Westminster, said: “Good Friday asks something of us — to be obedient, steadfast and to keep faith when the world feels uncertain. Carrying the cross through the centre of London is a public expression of that trust: that God has not abandoned us, but is still at work, redeeming the sin and hopelessness of the world.”
The Walk of Witness is one of central London’s most visible public acts of Christian faith, marked not by spectacle, but by quiet presence.
